<description>Fascinating article. You might want to look at the work of the Turkish anthropologist Muazzez Ilmiye Cig, who has pretty solidly established that the veil originated in the "temple harlot" culture of ancient Sumeria. Your reference to the Assyrian kings and how they used it is accurate.

However, I do see something else in this, and I doubt you will agree with me, but here it is:

Both the veiling of women of Islam and the exaggerated sexualizing of women in the West — and there are many varieties of intensity in both! — are evidence of male irresponsibility about sex.

In the first instance, Islamic veiling is an INTENSIVE sexualization of women and an exaggerated "mystifying" of their sexual power, as if it were some kind of devilish enchantment from which men must be protected. I think the clear fact is that Muhammad never treated women in this fashion, and his wives were veiled for political, not sexual, purposes. In fact, the veiling of women in Islam is an overt statement that Allah "screwed up" in making them as they are and that mere men had to correct the mistake by throwing tents over them. Well, in my opinion, Allah made no mistake whatsoever, and the arrogance of men in veiling them and the "holier-than-thou" naked female competition — just another form of attempted supremacism over other women, just like high fashion is — is a competition over men, not a statement of real piety, or even real beauty, for that matter.

Also, the constant accusation by Muslim women that their Western sisters are utterly immoral and, in fact, sluts is beginning to wear very thin.

But the bottom line point is that in both cases, extremes are abnormal. Veiling is abnormal. Period. It is also unhealthy, because it interferes with the normal production of Vitamin D, which leads to all sorts of problems for women, including a highly increased risk of cancer and diminished bone density in newborns, among other horrors.

But my main anger at veiling is the assumption that Allah is some fool who creates women with hair and clitorises (FGM is mandatory in Shafi'i Sunni Islam, as Al Azhar will point out) and so must be corrected by arrogant males who use veiling to declare ownership of women, to prevent themselves from having to deal with their own sexuality like grown men, and you have more recently used veiling as a means of "Islamic billboarding" — again using women rather than putting up with the hot, confining garb, identity-erasing garb themselves. They could, you know. They could wear cover (let them try that for 1,400 years!) as a statement of their Islamic purity, rather than making women do it.

But, of course, it'll continue. If there's anything that is certain beyond any shadow of a doubt, it's that women who don't want to be completely responsible for themselves — who want to compete with other women in mosque or culture for the best "catches" for husbands and the most favor in the sight of the imans who will pat them on the head for writing another "What My Hijab Means to Me" article — will keep at it.

If you want men to stop treating you like a sex object, stop acting like it by pandering to their every whim about what you should look like — including your veil. That doesn't doom you to wearing a bikini at the mall. It just means you have to deal with the root causes ... men's irresponsibility about their own sexual behavior and responses, the obvious notion that uncovered women are NOT raw meat, but simple human beings ... and women's vicious competition with each other, which may present itself as the holier-than-thou veiled Muslima or the under-dressed Western "vamp".

For both, it's still the seeking of the approval of men rather than the establishment of an adult self capable of responsibility and choice.
